Household debt tops 2008 peak

U.S. household debt rose to $12.73 trillion in the first quarter, according to data released by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

That puts the debt level ahead of the $12.68 trillion peak hit in 2008.

The first-quarter data show a $149 billion increase from the end of 2016.
