House Republicans met Wednesday and chose Blunt to replace DeLay temporarily. DeLay’s trial could begin within 90 days and could potentially keep him out of office until next year’s election.
Chief Deputy Majority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., will take on Blunt’s former duties.
“Our team has the very big shoes of Tom DeLay to fill temporarily. Under the strong leadership of the Speaker, we will work hard to do what Tom would do --– complete our work, and move forward with a positive agenda for the American people – until he returns,” Blunt said in a news release.
DeLay was indicted Wednesday for conspiracy in a campaign finance scheme.
After the indictment, Blunt issued a statement, standing by his fellow Congressman.
“Unfortunately, Tom DeLay’s effectiveness as Majority Leader is the best explanation for what happened,” he said. “I’m confident that a full examination of the facts in this case will clear Tom’s name and return him to his position in the House.”
Blunt serves on committees for internal relations, energy and commerce and financial services, and has taken strong stances for national security and tax relief in his eight years in office.
