Ascension Health and Providence St. Joseph Health are in talks to combine and form the nation's largest hospital operator.
The merger of St. Louis-based Ascension and Washington-based Providence would create a combined company with nearly $45 billion in annual revenue and 191 hospitals.
Currently, the largest hospital operator is Hospital Corporation of America, which has 177 hospitals and reported $41.5 billion in 2016 revenue.
