Home care workers rally for higher wages

Posted online
Home care workers are joining a nationwide movement to raise the wages of low-paid Americans with meetings and rallies in more than 20 cities the next two weeks.

Kicking off today in Carson City, Nev., the campaign was inspired by fast-food and retail worker protests in the past two years that helped grow their minimum pay, according to USA Today.

The 2 million personal care and home health aides seek a $15 hourly wage and the right to unionize, which is barred in some states.

The median hourly wage for home care workers is roughly $9.60, and annual pay averages $18,600 since many are part time, according to the Labor Department and National Employment Law Project.
