H&M stores closed by landlords amid Xinjiang fallout

Posted online

H&M stores in some parts of China are being closed by their landlords amid the country's growing sensitivity toward criticism of the human-rights situation in Xinjiang.

The reported closures impacting H&M come after an undated company statement surfaced that expressed concern about reports of forced labor in the Xinjiang region. The area is a large producer of cotton used in the global apparel supply chain.

Bloomberg reports at least six H&M stores in Urumqi, Yinchuan, Changchun and Lianyungang have been closed by the properties' owners.
