Iowa high schooler Dasia Taylor, 17, invented color-changing sutures that detect infection.
Using beets as a dye, the sutures change color when a surgical wound becomes infected.
The Iowa City West High School student began working on the project in late 2019. Earlier this year, she was named one of 40 finalists in the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search.
