High school junior takes 'sports photo of the year' at Royals' game

Posted online
Kansas City Royals’ blogger Andy McCullough calls the photo taken Sunday of All-Star left-fielder Alex Gordon by Ethan Routzahn – a high school junior sitting in the stands – the “sports photo of the year.”

Routzahn, who took the picture with his iPhone 6, shared it via Twitter along with the message, “How’s it going Alex Gordon? Just made a sweet catch flying by me in the stands.”

Playing the Chicago White Sox, Gordon had chased down a foul ball before crashing into the stands and falling over a green, plastic seat. Routzahn’s photo features Gordon on his back between seat rows holding his glove in the air, with a White Sox fan reaching down to help (and a child’s hand on the outfielder’s arm) and the “perfect” mix of light and shadow. Routzahn said any teenager could have taken the picture, according to the Kansas City Star.
