RY COMMENTS AND HARD COR. Ry Bread & Apple Cor's, the restaurant and brewery in Chesterfield Village, is closing up shop. The restaurant served its last meals May 5, and the bar was set to be open for another week.
GOING BOTH WAYS. McDaniel Avenue between Kimbrough and Campbell is now a two-way thoroughfare. The change was official May 3, and a ribbon-cutting was held May 4 to ballyhoo the switch. Elsewhere downtown, cranes were swinging as signs went up on Davis Properties' Woodruff Building and the McDaniel Building, both on Park Central East. The neon lights, up to 5 feet high, face east on their respective buildings. Meanwhile, Lexan panels were replacing broken glass panels in another Davis Properties asset, the Heer's Building.
CERTIFIED. NewStream Enterprises, a subsidiary of SRC Corp., is now ISO 9002/QS 9000 certified. Officials at NewStream said the quality certification is important for the automotive and truck industry packager to meet the efficiencies required in a competitive marketplace. "The key to success in this business is the ability to predict the market trends, buy materials efficiently and turn the inventory approximately 32 times a year," according to a company release. Such turnover requires clear and consistent procedures, a process that was completed with the certification. "The goal is to drive out the potential for error, to increase customer satisfaction and consumer trust," the release said. NewStream employs about 40 people and has more than $19 million in sales annually.
LOOK IT UP. Southwestern Bell's new Springfield/Branson telephone directory could be showing up on your doorstep, or your desk, in the next few weeks. The phone company will begin delivering its new telephone directory May 8. This year's directory cover contains a photograph of two cannons at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. Research shows that area residents refer to the directory almost 33 million times each year, said Steve Vaught, area manager for Southwestern Bell. Old phone books can also be recycled May 11-June 12. Books can be dropped off in Springfield at Dillon's stores, St. John's Health Systems, the city of Springfield's recycling centers, Cox Health Care, Bass Pro Shops and Waste Management of Springfield. There will also be drop-off sites in Branson, Buffalo, Marshfield, Nixa, Ozark and Seymour. For more information, call 800-479-2977.
20 MEN. Branson officials unveiled May 8 pictures of the city's mayors as part of an exhibit in City Hall. Arlene Schaefer, wife of Branson Mayor Lou Schaefer, has headed up the effort. Branson was incorporated in 1912 and since then has had 20 men serve as mayor. "We thought it important to recognize those men who were in leadership positions during the growth of Branson from a small river town to an internationally known tourist destination," Arlene Schaefer said.
APPOINTEE. City Council May 5 appointed Bob Chancellor to fill the remaining term of Charlie Denison, who resigned in March to run for Greene County Presiding Commissioner. Chancellor was chosen from nine candidates and will be sworn in May 11. Chancellor's experience includes 26 years with the Voice of America as a correspondent, news writer and editor. The SMSU graduate worked from 1955 to 1963 in Springfield at local TV stations and as a writer for the Springfield Daily News. He's been back in Springfield for eight years. The council seat term lasts until April 1999.
SIGN LANGUAGE. Springfield state Sen. Roseann Bentley announced Senate passage of a measure to get museums and historic sites on roadside logo highway signs. Museums that don't meet current minimum-visitor requirements could, under Bentley's legislation, be eligible for inclusion in a new "attractions" category. To qualify now for inclusion on interstate signs, museums must have more than 200,000 visitors a year. The designation would be in addition to the well-known gas, food, lodging categories. The signs would be paid for by advertising companies.
