|bold_on|BIG IMPACT. Nominations are now open for the SBJ Economic Impact Awards. In conjunction with its 20th anniversary, SBJ will honor five businesses July 20. Eligible businesses are those that have made a significant impact on the area in the last 12 months and are located within a 50-mile radius of Springfield. One business will be selected from each of five categories: real estate, retail, financial services, information technology and telecommunications. Also, an individual will be honored with the SBJ Lifetime Achievement in Business Award. |bold_on|LET'S GO TO THE MOVIES. The Campbell Cin 16 will feature open-captioned versions of the film "Erin Brockovich" for the hearing impaired. The special version of the film will be shown April 25 and 26 and will feature subtitles. |bold_on|UPN "SMACKDOWN." Missing the World Wrestling Federation's "Smackdown" program? The folks at AT&T Cable Services want to see that you don't. The local cable provider announced the UPN network has joined its line-up. Local Channel 15, based in Branson, appeared on Cable Channel 28 as of April 11. UPN 15 carries programming from the United Paramount Network such as "Star Trek Voyager," the aforementioned "Smackdown," and "Secret Agent Man." The network also carries syndicated programs such as "People's Court," "Jenny Jones" and Kansas City Royals baseball. Paul Miller, president of Miller Family Broadcasting, the company that owns UPN 15, said the station's presence on cable in Springfield and Greene County will "greatly expand our audience and meet a significant desire expressed by cable subscribers to see our programming."|ret||ret||tab|

|bold_on|FANCY WOODWORK. Kitchenland USA, a Nixa-based business, has been recognized for the second year in a row in Kansas City Homes and Gardens magazine. The company's work on cabinets in a Lake of the Ozarks home is featured as part of the magazine's May/June 2000 issue. Kitchenland has been in business since 1993 and focuses on computer design of kitchens. Its headquarters, at 2001 N. Michael Lane near the intersection of Highway 160 and CC, showcases 15 sample kitchens. |ret||ret||tab|

|bold_on|INTO THE TREES. Springfield has once again been designated a Tree City USA. This is the 15th consecutive year the city has received the award, which is issued by state foresters, who co-sponsor the program with the USDA Forest Service. To become a Tree City USA, a community must have a city tree ordinance, a legal tree-governing body, a comprehensive urban forestry program and an Arbor Day observance. Tree City USA communities receive a flag with the program's logo and a walnut-mounted plaque. Winners also receive Tree City USA community signs with stickers indicating additional qualifying years. Missouri Department of Conservation District Forester Duane Parker will present the Tree City USA flag to Mayor Lee Gannaway.|ret||ret||tab|

|bold_on|BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE. A proposed amendment to reduce the number of Missouri representatives received preliminary approval in the Senate April 6. The proposal would be an amendment to the Missouri Constitution, and it would require voter approval. The measure, Senate Joint Resolution 53, would reduce the size of the Missouri House of Representatives from 163 members to 105 members. Missouri now has the fourth largest membership of any lower legislative chamber in the nation. The resolution would reduce the ratio of representatives to senators from 4.7-to-1 to 3-to-1.|ret||ret||tab|

|bold_on|SLICE OF NICE. In memory of Payne Stewart, the Bill & Payne Stewart Golf Course and the American Cancer Society are teaming up April 20 for the Knicker Invitational. Tee-off time will be 9 a.m. The format is a four-person scramble. Proceeds go to research, educational programs and projects, and to provide services for cancer patients and their families. Reservations must be made by April 26. Winners from each of the event's six divisions advance to the Missouri State Golf Tournament. Registration for a four-person team, which includes entry fee, lunch and the post-tournament awards banquet, is $500.
