PERFORMANCE ART|ret||ret||tab|
Award-winning artist and Springfield Coffee Co. owner Scott Hepper has done an original painting to be used as the poster for the Landers Theatre's 2000-2001 season. Hepper, who provided the painting to the Landers at no charge, will sell signed, numbered, limited edition lithograph prints for $20 to $25 each, donating all proceeds to the theatre. Scott Ables, account executive with Lithocraft Color Service, is providing the lithographic reproductions, as well as the large marquee poster at the Landers' entrance. The painting comprises six panels, each illustrating one of the season's plays beginning with "South Pacific" and ending with "On Golden Pond." The style is "the same style I've developed and used for the last 12 years cubism," Hepper said.|ret||ret||tab|

PUBLISHER'S NIGHTMARE|ret||ret||tab|
"My friends, we have a chance to become Big Publishing's worst nightmare," says horror novelist Stephen King on his Web site, www.stephenking.com. King has introduced a new concept in online publishing: "The Plant," a pay-as-you-go novel offered in downloadable installments. The first episode is already available online and the second is expected out in August. Payment is on the honor system: readers can pay before or after downloading at a cost of $1 per download. What's to keep people from downloading and not paying? Well, if readers don't pay for the first two installments, King says, there won't be any more. "If you pay, the story rolls. If you don't, the story folds," he writes. Not really a viable option for us newspaper folk, but an interesting concept to keep an eye on. |ret||ret||tab|

LUCKY DUCK|ret||ret||tab|
Arthur B. "Bent" Agee, retired senior vice president of Heer's department store, was the winner of the 17-foot Lowe's bass boat at The Rubber Duck Race at Finley Park July 22. Agee, who had just celebrated his 79th birthday two days earlier, said the win was a real surprise. He did not attend the race because of that day's rain, but organizers tracked him down with the good news. After receiving his prize, Agee donated $500 to the event's benefiting project, a new youth center to be built in eastern Christian County. "I thought I ought to give something back," Agee said. The duck race was sponsored by the Greater Ozark Sertoma Club, the Ozark Park Board and the Main Street Program.[[In-content Ad]]
