OUT FOR BLOOD
The American Red Cross Blood Services Greater Ozarks-Arkansas Region and the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks report they are experiencing a blood-supply crisis. According to an Aug. 30 release from the Red Cross, only 341 units of blood were collected Aug. 29, short of the 450 units per day it needs to supply area hospitals. Likewise, Jeff Champion, director of public relations at CBCO, said Community Blood Center has been able to collect just enough to supply its hospitals day to day, with some orders for O negative unfilled. As of Aug. 31, he said, CBCO had four or five units of O negative on the shelf when normally it would have 40. O negative blood is the type most frequently used in trauma cases. The Red Cross's Springfield Donor Center at 313 E. Battlefield, Ste. B, is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday. CBCO's Donor Collection Center, 2230 S. Glenstone, is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. the first Saturday of each month.
WHAT'S IN A NAME
Snelling Search, 1722 S. Glenstone, Ste. QQ, isn't going anywhere, and it hasn't changed its name, said owner/manager Paul Sherard. Ever since another, separate Snelling franchise opened in Springfield a few years ago, Sherard said, people have confused the two agencies. When the other operation's sign went up on West Battlefield, people thought Sherard's company had moved; now, after reading a recent item in these pages, people think he's changed his company's name. For the record, Snelling Personnel Services on Battlefield, owned by The Williamson Group, is now called WillStaff Worldwide. Sherard's operation, located on Glenstone, is still named Snelling Search and has been in Springfield since 1967. Sherard, who purchased Snelling Search Sept. 1, 1985, has six employees, and his counselors have 73 years of experience in placement. Snelling Search provides permanent placement for career-type positions.
ALL THAT JAZZ
Louisiana's Preservation Hall Jazz Band returns to Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts for a revival of classical New Orleans jazz at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25. New Orleans style jazz is slightly slower in tempo than Dixieland style, and the melody is always clearly heard, according to information from Southwest Missouri State University. Tickets are $22, $18 and $12 and can be ordered at 836-SMSU. Hours of operation for the box office are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.
TANGLED WEB
According to Dun & Bradstreet's U.S. Small-Business Survey, reported in its summer 2000 Economic & Business Highlights newsletter, most small-business owners have Internet access, but more than half say the Internet has had no measurable impact on their business. D&B reported that 70 percent of small-business owners responding to its survey said they have access to the Internet, up from 57 percent a year ago, and 38 percent have their own Web sites. However, only 31 percent indicated the Internet had a positive impact on business. E-mail is the main use of Internet access for 71 percent of small business respondents, while use of the Internet for business research declined from 71 percent in the 1999 survey to 58 percent in 2000.
