J. Myrick Howard, a nationally-known expert in historic preservation, will be the keynote speaker at the May 11 Positioning, Planning and Partnerships training workshop sponsored by Preservation Springfield, a highlight of National Preservation Week May 13-19. Howard, president of Preservation North Carolina since 1978, has won awards from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and developed the first endangered properties program in the nation. Local and regional historic-sites boards and commissions, city leaders, neighborhood association boards of directors and anyone interested in historic preservation, is invited to attend the workshop, according to Paula Ringer, chair of the Landmarks Board, which is a co-sponsor. SBJ ECONOMIC IMPACT AWARDS|ret||ret||tab|

If you know a business that has had a significant impact on the area economy, let us at SBJ know by May 9. For the second year, SBJ will recognize businesses from five different industries within a 50-mile radius of Springfield, according to Debra Fickbohm, SBJ special projects coordinator. The five industries honored this year are construction, health care, manufacturing, automotive and advertising/media. Also, an individual will be honored with the SBJ Lifetime Achievement in Business Award. A letter detailing why an individual should receive the award will serve as a nomination for this distinction. SBJ and the award finalists will gather at The Tower Club July 26 for a banquet. The 2000 Lifetime Achievement honoree was John Q. Hammons. SBJ also will publish the Economic Impact Awards special supplement, a four-color, glossy, magazine-style publication, July 30. BRANSON GOLF CLUB TOP IN STATE|ret||ret||tab|

Branson Creek Golf Club has been named Missouri's No. 1 public golf course by Golf Digest Magazine. Designed by Tom Fazio, the course opened a year ago. Courses are evaluated by a nationwide network of more than 800 panelists whose criteria includes shot values, resistance to scoring, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning, ambiance and walkability. Steve Shields, general manager and director of golf at the club, said, "We are honored to receive this award from such a prestigious magazine as Golf Digest. Recognition like this goes beyond our own fairways and greens; this award is another step in helping make Branson a truly great golf destination. The entire region should be proud." The Springfield Public Schools Foundation and the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce will hold the eighth annual Teacher Appreciation Banquet 6-9 p.m. May 10 at the University Plaza Convention Center. Local children's book writer and owner of Glen Block, David Harrison, will be the keynote speaker. Liz Viele will be honored as Teacher of the Year and the four other finalists will be honored as well. A bronze sculpture of the Roman god of wine, valued at $36,800, will be auctioned to raise money to combat Alz-heimer's at "Wines To Remember" beginning at 6:30 p.m. May 18 at the Tower Club. Sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association's southwest Missouri chapter, the reception and silent auction features "Bacchus II" which comes with a certificate of authenticity and deed of ownership. Dr. Walter Gaska and Ron Junge will assist in an auction of wines donated from private cellars. Auction items also include a chef-prepared dinner for six, other dining and clothing gift certificates, jewelry, lodging packages and more. Branson's Lennon Brothers will perform at 8 p.m. Pfizer is the grand sponsor, and other sponsors are ManorCare Health Services, Custom Metalcraft Inc., Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Signature Bank and attorney R.
