Eight Springfield area nonprofits received $706,025 in grants from the Missouri Foundation for Health during its latest round of funding. The organization's board of directors approved $7.6 million in grants statewide.
The largest local grant, $150,000, was approved for Springfield-based Southwest Missouri Office on Aging to help the nonprofit offer meals and nutrition services for the elderly, according to a news release.
The grant was among seven funded locally through the Missouri Foundation for Health's Basic Support program, which provides funds for operations expenses - such as salaries and equipment - to health-related nonprofits.
The two-year grants also were awarded to:
- Springfield-based AIDS Project of the Ozarks, $75,000 to fund educational efforts related to HIV and AIDS, as well as treatment for uninsured and underinsured HIV patients;
- the southwest Missouri chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, $75,000 to provide respite care, referral services, support groups and educational outreach services;
- Branson-based Crisis Center, $75,000 to offer recovery services for survivors of physical, sexual and psychological abuse;
- Fordland Clinic Inc., $75,000 to provide medical, dental and mental health services for low-income families;
- Branson-based Options Pregnancy Clinic, $75,000 to provide pregnancy testing, counseling and health education services; and
- Springfield-based Recovery Chapel, $75,000 to offer treatment services to low-income individuals with substance abuse disorders.
The eighth grant, $106,025, was awarded to Ozarks Regional YMCA through the health foundation's Social Innovation for Missouri program, which pairs foundation funds with federal and local matching dollars to address obesity and tobacco use. According to the release, the Ozarks Regional YMCA will use the funds to develop wellness, nutrition and physical activity programs at 15 area schools and work sites.
