Health center getting $1.4 million federal grant

Posted online
Jordan Valley Community Health Center will receive more than $1.4 million in a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The grant, announced today by U.S. Congressman Roy Blunt's office, will be used to finish basement facilities for a new women's clinic at the health center, which caters to low-income patients.

The health center moved from its former space on West Kearney Street into a new $8.2 million building at 440 E. Tampa St. in July. The grant will allow the center to expand its services for women, which already include a program specifically for the Women, Infants and Children program.

"With 55 percent of births in our area to Medicaid mothers, it is important they have options to receive comprehensive care," Blunt said in a news release. "With the WIC clinic in the same building, it is only natural that the Jordan Valley Community Health Center's new facilities would house a clinic dedicated to prenatal and women's health."

Health Center Executive Director Brooks Miller, who called the women's health clinic the final part of a comprehensive medical care plan, said in the release that the facility should be open by Dec. 1.
