The St. Louis area’s health care industry employed 2,700 fewer health care workers in April than it did in the same month last year, and year-over-year comparisons have been down since October, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The reason for the change isn’t entirely clear. Nationally, health care employment is up 1.5 percent and Missouri is up 4,200 jobs, or 1.4 percent, in the past year, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
BJC Health System announced 160 layoffs last year, and recently, St. Louis-based Mercy announced 200 to 300 job cuts, though the organization didn’t say how many would be in the shadow of the Gateway Arch.
One possible explanation: The St. Louis health care industry secured greater job growth between 2007 and 2010, so the cuts could be push back for previous gains.
