John Q. Hammons Hotels Inc. held grand opening ceremonies Sept. 8 for its Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka, Kan.
The 224-room hotel is adjacent to the Kansas Expocentre.
The hotel is the fourth Hammons-managed property to open in 1998. Properties in St. Augustine, Fla.; Tampa, Fla.; and Sioux Falls, S.D., opened earlier this year. The Embassy Suites Portland Airport in Oregon is scheduled to open in October.
Events in Topeka for the Capitol Plaza's opening included a news conference, ribbon cutting and private reception. Chairman and CEO John Q. Hammons was in attendance, along with Lonnie Funk, the company's regional vice president, and Bob Martorana, general manager for the Capitol Plaza.
Hammons Hotels has an additional 12 projects under development in Texas, Oklahoma, North Carolina, New Mexico, Florida, South Carolina and Missouri.
A release from the company said Hammons is the nation's leading builder of new Embassy Suites hotels and is developing the first two Renaissance hotels since the brand was acquired by the Marriott Corporation.
Hammons Hotels Inc., traded publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol HQH, now owns 41 hotels with more than 10,000 rooms and suites and manages an additional four hotels with 952 rooms.
