John Q. Hammons continues to expand his hotel listings. The Springfield developer announced April 4 the opening of a $40 million Embassy Suites Hotel and spa in Albuquerque, N.M. Hammons owns the nine-story, 261-suite hotel and John Q. Hammons Hotels Inc. manages the property. The hotel is Hammons’ second property in the city; he also owns the Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid North. The day after opening the Albuquerque Embassy Suites, Hammons announced that he has reached an agreement with the city of Glendale, Ariz., to build a luxury hotel there. The 12-story, 320-room Marriott Renaissance Hotel and spa is projected to open in fall 2006. The hotel property is near a city-owned arena. “Glendale developed its world-class arena with the intent of attracting this kind of high-quality hotel development,” said Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs, in a new release. Hammons and the city also are expected to partner on construction of an adjacent 80,000-square-foot conference center, with a parking garage to be built by the city. The new hotel property will more than double the number of hotel rooms in Glendale and will help to meet the area’s needs during upcoming national events such as the 2007 Fiesta Bowl and the 2008 Super Bowl.
