"My Little Self is Happy..." Journey by Faith: Helping Finish Her Home

Posted online

When Faith, a single mother of two, was accepted into Habitat for Humanity of Springfield’s Partner Homebuyer program, she didn’t just sign up for a house. She committed to building a home, a future and a legacy for her family with an affordable mortgage.

“I’m a single mom of two kids with hardly any help. This wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for you,” Faith said. “Thank you so much. I love you guys.”

Faith’s story reflects what Habitat for Humanity does best. It creates lasting change by bringing community members together: volunteers, donors and future homeowners who build more than houses. They build stability, strength and self-reliance.

Through “Journey by Faith,” Habitat is documenting the full process of building Faith’s home, from groundbreaking to move-in. But she is not building alone. Every local business, every volunteer and every donor can play a vital role in this transformation.

Build, Repair and Revitalize

Habitat for Humanity of Springfield, Missouri, partners with the community to build safe, affordable housing, repair homes for those in need and revitalize entire neighborhoods. Their mission is designed to create stronger foundations for families and stronger futures for the region.

Whether it involves constructing new homes like Faith’s, providing critical home repairs or investing in under-resourced neighborhoods, Habitat delivers impact that lasts.

When families have a safe place to call home, they are better positioned to succeed at work and school, contribute to the local economy and build generational stability. That is a win for the whole business community.

Three Ways to Get Involved in the Mission: Shop. Donate. Volunteer.

1. SHOP at the ReStore

Habitat’s ReStore is more than a resale shop. It is a direct funding source for local construction and repair efforts. By selling donated furniture, appliances and home goods, the ReStore turns everyday items into tools for affordable housing.

How businesses can help:

• Donate surplus inventory, fixtures or furniture

• Host fundraising events or employee volunteer days

• Encourage customers and employees to shop

Every purchase helps build, repair and revitalize homes in our community.

2. DONATE to Fuel the Work

In addition to donating appliances, furniture, building materials and other household items - financial support from the business community helps Habitat buy building materials, fund skilled labor and manage logistics. Whether your company contributes through sponsorships, matching gifts or monthly giving, every dollar creates measurable change.

Ways to give:

One-time or recurring financial donations

• Join the Hope Builders Club

• Donate land, stock or in-kind goods

• Sponsor a build phase or tool package

Donations directly support families like Faith’s, helping them build strength and independence.

3. VOLUNTEER to Make an Impact

Habitat is the #1 Home Builder powered by volunteers. Habitat relies on local volunteers to lower costs and deepen community connection. Whether on the construction site, at ReStore or through leadership roles, every hour makes a difference.

Opportunities for companies:

• Construction crews (no experience needed)

• ReStore support staff and sorters

• Event volunteers for Women Build or Rock the Block

• Board or committee service

Group volunteer days are a great way to build company culture while making a visible difference in the community.

Together, We Can Rewrite the Story

Habitat’s model is not about charity. It is about partnership.

“Families like Faith’s don’t receive homes, they earn them,” said Chris Tuckness, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Springfield. “Our homebuyers invest hundreds of hours of sweat equity, complete financial education classes and pay an affordable mortgage. That’s what makes this work so powerful. We’re building more than homes. We’re building stability and long-term opportunity, and our repairs are helping provide a safe and healthy home.”

By supporting Habitat’s mission to build, repair and revitalize, your business helps shape a more stable and resilient Springfield.

Whether you shop, donate or volunteer, you help make home possible for local families. That benefits us all.
