The 1,100-square-foot facility on the main floor of the John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts-owned hotel was designed to include three massage/skincare rooms, four pedicure stations and three manicure stations. Two of the rooms combine into one for couple's massages, said Robert Henley, general manager of University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center.
Henley said the spa would add an incentive for groups wanting to utilize the convention center and stay at the hotel.
"We get to really market to meeting planners when they come to town. They get to see that we have something for their attendees to do. Now they have the option of having spa treatments right here in the hotel," he said.
Henley said the space previously housed half of a board room and a now-closed hair salon. Grove Spa is leasing the space from the hotel for an undisclosed amount.
Grove Spa Director Haden Long said Oak Grove Construction served as general contractor for the project, with design work by Jeff Barber.
Long said the spa would likely open Dec. 5 or Dec. 6, before the official grand opening on Dec. 7.
The event, which also will celebrate Grove Pharmacy's 60th anniversary, will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony by Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce ambassadors. Officials from JQH, Grove Spa and Grove Pharmacy, the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce and Urban Districts Alliance are expected to be in attendance, according to a news release.
Grove Spa was added to the 1522 E. Sunshine St. Grove Pharmacy location in 1995, according to
