Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens yesterday halted the execution of Marcellus Williams a few hours before he was scheduled to be put to death.
Greitens' decision follows the release of new DNA evidence supporting his innocence in the 1998 murder of Lisha Gayle, a former reporter, during a burglary.
"To carry out the death penalty, the people of Missouri must have confidence in the judgment of guilt," Greitens said. "In light of new information, I am appointing a board of inquiry in this case."
The board comprising five former Missouri judges will report back to the governor with a recommendation.
