Greene County residents join federal broadband program via Mediacom

A federal program designed to lessen the burden of internet costs for low-income households is making headway in Greene County.

New York-based Mediacom Communications Corp. reported in a news release yesterday that it has 25,000 customers nationwide participating in the federal Affordable Connectivity Program. The initiative provides a monthly credit of $30 to eligible participants to lower their broadband bills.

More than 2,100 of those Mediacom customers are in Missouri, and about 800 homes in Greene County were utilizing the Affordable Connectivity Program and Mediacom Connect-2-Complete Plus, another program for low-income customers, as of June, said Phyllis Peters, the company's communications director. Participants in the Affordable Connectivity Program may be eligible if their household income is up to 200% of the federal poverty level or if they receive government assistance, among other qualifying measures, according to Mediacom's website.

"I’m sure that is increasing," Peters said via email. "We’re really committed to closing these gaps for individuals and families with limited financial resources. It's a very tangible impact."

In response to the Biden administration's call for lower broadband bills through the Affordable Connectivity Program of the federal infrastructure bill, Mediacom committed to provide download speeds of 100 megabits per second to low-income customers for $30 per month. By matching the plan with Mediacom Connect-2-Complete Plus, customers are eligible to receive broadband service from Mediacom for free, according to the release.

“Our fiber-based broadband network is available in 70 Missouri communities, and beyond a few larger areas like Springfield and Columbia, most are low-population areas where residents may be isolated,” Mediacom Senior Operations Director Steve Bennett said in the release. “We want to help more Missouri residents stay connected to people and resources that contribute to their well-being.”
