“This is a terrific milestone for the new arena, and we very much appreciate the generosity of Bill Turner, Joe Turner and Great Southern Bank,” MSU President Michael Nietzel said in a news release Monday. “It continues a long and mutually beneficial relationship between Missouri State and Great Southern.”
Groundbreaking for the $67 million arena is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. Thursday. east of Hammons Student Center. Its targeted completion date is November 2008, in time for the 2008-09 basketball season.
The arena is named in honor of Springfield developer John Q. Hammons, who has agreed to chip in $30 million of its cost. It will feature more than 11,000 seats, 22 private suites, more than 100 loge seats, 55 courtside seats, a Hall of Fame, a team souvenir store and a ticket office.
