Great Southern reclaims MSA market share lead

Great Southern Bank reclaimed the top spot in deposit market share in the five-county metropolitan statistical area, according to Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. data released Oct. 2.

As of June 30, Great Southern held 14.6 percent of the deposits across its branches in Greene, Christian, Webster, Polk and Dallas counties, compared to Commerce Bank’s 13.9 percent in the MSA. Last year, Commerce Bank was MSA market share leader, at 12.5 percent of deposits, ending Great Southern’s nine-year run at the top, 2002–10. Commerce held the largest amount of deposits in the MSA 1998–2001.

For the first time in history, both Great Southern and Commerce this year topped $1 billion in deposits within the five counties. The 41 institutions operating in the MSA held a combined $7.9 billion in deposits, up 7 percent from $7.4 billion in the market last year.

As of June 30, the Top 10 financial institutions by deposit market share in the Springfield MSA, according to the FDIC:
  1. Great Southern Bank, $1.16 billion, 14.59 percent
  2. Commerce Bank, $1.1 billion, 13.93 percent
  3. Empire Bank, $925.9 million, 11.65 percent
  4. Liberty Bank, $542.5 million, 6.83 percent
  5. Guaranty Bank, $498.9 million, 6.28 percent
  6. Bank of America, $327.3 million, 4.12 percent
  7. BancorpSouth, $307.9 million, 3.88 percent
  8. U.S. Bank, $287.2 million, 3.61 percent
  9. Springfield First Community Bank, $239.4 million, 3.01 percent
  10. Metropolitan National Bank, $232 million, 2.92 percent
In the city of Springfield, Great Southern retained the top spot with $1 billion in deposits, an 18.35 percent share, followed by Commerce Bank, $853 million, or 15.53 percent, and Empire Bank, $646 million, or 11.76 percent.
