Grants narrow gender gap in science, math

Posted online
A $198,377 grant to three Missouri State University mathematics professors will be dispersed in minigrants to programs that motivate girls to pursue careers in math- and science-related fields.

K-12 schools and organizations in Missouri, Kansas and northeast Oklahoma can apply for $1,000 minigrants to fund assessment activities and projects that encourage science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs for girls.

MSU professors Paula Kemp, Kishor Shah and Larry Campbell received money for the Midwestern Rural-Urban Collaborative Project and will work with area girl-serving organizations.

“It is essential that women and minorities be encouraged to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Kemp said in a news release. “While gender gaps in some of the fields are narrowing, new ones are developing, especially in computer science and engineering.”
