With the theme “The Future of Agriculture Begins Today,” the conference kicked off last night with a reception at Tan-Tar-A Resort featuring Missouri foods and beverages.
Today’s seminars discuss industry trends and future opportunities, including biotech crops, global production and genomics. Gov. Matt Blunt was scheduled to appear at 10 a.m.
“The Governor’s Conference is an excellent event to network with fellow farmers, producers and leaders in the agricultural industry to discuss new and emerging opportunities,” said Fred Ferrell, director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture, in a news release. “Many of our farmers and producers have success stories that we can all learn from.”
Agribusiness has an annual economic impact of $5.2 billion in the 12-county region including and surrounding Greene County, according to a 2005 study by Missouri State University. Processing, mostly of cheese and poultry, is responsible for $4.23 billion of that total.
The governor’s conference concludes tonight.
