Government: 5.6M fingerprints stolen in U.S. personnel data hack

Posted online
Hackers who stole security clearance data on millions of Defense Department and other U.S. government employees got away with about 5.6 million fingerprint records, around 4.5 million more than initially reported, the government announced yesterday.

The news comes just ahead of a visit to Washington, D.C., by Chinese President Xi Jinping. While U.S. officials have privately blamed the breach on Chinese government hackers, they haven't done so publicly. President Barack Obama reportedly will discuss cybersecurity with the Chinese president at the White House tomorrow.
