Google charged in Android monopoly lawsuit

Posted online
The European Commission filed suit against Google alleging the company has abused its market position by imposing restrictions on Android device manufacturers and mobile network operators.

The suit stems from Google's requirement that smartphone makers load 11 core Google apps into Android phones before being made available for purchase. The apps must be at least one swipe away from the home screen and can't be deleted.

"Based on our investigation thus far, we believe that Google's behavior denies consumers a wider choice of mobile apps and services and stands in the way of innovation by other players, in breach of EU antitrust rules," said Margrethe Vestager, the head of competition policy at the European Commission.

Preloaded apps include Google search, YouTube, Gmail and Google Maps.

In response, Google general counsel Kent Walker said the company would "demonstrate that Android is good for competition and good for consumers."
