Google did not show up for a congressional hearing yesterday on foreign use of social media to influence U.S. politics.
Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey testified. Next to them was an empty chair with a placecard for Google.
Google had offered to send Kent Walker, its senior vice president of global affairs, but the Senate Intelligence Committee said it wanted someone more senior. Google did not provide anyone.
"I'm deeply disappointed that Google - one of the most influential digital platforms in the world - chose not to send its own top corporate leadership to engage this committee," said Sen. Mark Warner, the committee's top Democrat.
