Gold Mechanical Inc. CEO Ron Bogart published his first book this month.
Called "A Heartbeat Away," the leadership fable focusing on business succession became available March 3, Bogart said. He self-published the 92-page book that's for sale on Amazon at a paperback price of $22.50 and Kindle price of $9.99.
While technically a work of fiction, the book features real-life occurrences. Key to the themes in the book, Bogart's predecessor suffered a heart attack, and Bogart himself had open heart surgery a year ago this Saturday.
Bogart said he has applied those real-world examples to succession planning at Gold Mechanical, and he believes the lessons learned are applicable to any business.
"The traditional succession planning is failed in that it's an event instead of an ongoing effort," he said. "People haven't made it part of their day-to-day operating system."
At Gold Mechanical, all critical leaders have a succession plan, he said.
"It changes the conversations you have every day," Bogart said. "When somebody gets identified as somebody's safety net, it changes things. It strengthens the organization as a whole.
"There's an enormous amount of life that can come out of that."
Bogart is already writing his next book, tentatively called "The Psychology of Business," he said. Bogart noted he's a couple of chapters into the new book.
