GM to lay off 2,000

General Motors Co. announced yesterday it would lay off 2,000 hourly workers in January at two car plants to cut bloated inventory as sales of small cars continue to slow.

In Lansing, Michigan, the company will cut 810 hourly jobs and 29 salaried positions. The plant there builds the Cadillac ATS, Cadillac CTS and Chevrolet Camaro.

In Lordstown, Ohio, an assembly plant will be affected by 1,200 layoffs of hourly workers and 43 salaried workers. The plant builds the Chevrolet Cruze.
