GM, Ford sales stall

Posted online
Four of the top five U.S. auto sellers on Monday reported sales in January that were lower than expected. Reuters reports the companies primarily blame extreme winter weather for the sales dip.

Not all reports were negative, with Chrysler Group, a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, and Nissan North America reporting increases.

John Mendel, head of Honda's U.S. sales operation, told Reuters: "January's foul weather cooled things a bit," adding, "we look forward to a warming trend" in the coming months.

According to a Reuters report, total industry sales fell in January 3.1 percent, but analysts predict a rebound in February and March.

Some significant sales movements include:
  • GM sales dropped 11.9 percent to 171,486, while analysts predicted 187,782;
  • Ford company sales fell 7.1 percent to 154,644, while analysts predicted sales of 157,411 for the month;
  • Toyota sales fell 7.2 percent in the first month of the year to 146,365, missing analysts' estimate of 153,003;
  • Honda's sales fell 2.1 percent to 91,631 in January, compared to a projected 97,927; and
  • Chrysler Group's U.S. sales rose 8 percent in the month to 127,183.
