Glenstone Avenue widening project begins

Posted online
Crews start work this week on a project that would widen Glenstone Avenue to six lanes between Battlefield Road and James River Freeway.

The $5 million project is designed to widen Glenstone to six lanes and aims to improve intersections at Peele Street, Independence Street and Republic Court, according to a Missouri Department of Transportation news release.

"The work is being done to help move traffic more safely and efficiently along Glenstone Avenue and to reduce the backups on westbound James River Freeway at Glenstone Avenue," MoDOT officials said in the release.

Springfield-based Leo Journagan Construction Co. Inc. is serving as the primary contractor for the work expected to be completed in late November.

The project includes:
  • adding an additional lane in each direction on Glenstone Avenue;
  • transforming Glenstone and Independence into a four-legged intersection;
  • closing the east outer road entrance to Peele street and relocating it north; and
  • changing the Republic Court/Glenstone Avenue intersection for easier entrance and removing the traffic signal.
Republic widening
The city of Springfield has scheduled an April 24 open house to hear residents' input on a widening project of East Republic Road.

The project would widen Republic to five lanes from Parkcrest Avenue through Campbell Avenue, to the signal at the entrance to Chase Card Services, according to a release.

It also would add dual left turn lanes on Republic for those turning onto Campbell, as well as curb and gutter installations, stormwater systems and added bike lanes and sidewalks.

The input meeting is scheduled 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 922 W. Republic Road.[[In-content Ad]]
