British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline today announced the promotion of Emma Walmsley, its head of consumer health care, to CEO after an internal and external search.
Walmsley becomes the first woman to lead a global pharmaceutical company and the seventh to run a business in Britain's FTSE 100 index.
Walmsley, 47, succeeds Andrew Witty, who plans to retire on March 31, 2017.
