Germany thumping Brazil breaks Twitter record

The hashtag was #BRA v #GER and after Germany's 7-1 wallop on Brazil, it quickly became the most talked about sporting event on Twitter – ever.

The FIFA World Cup Soccer match garnered 35.6 million total tweets, beating previous sports champ the 2014 Superbowl, which came in at 24.9 million tweets.

Bloomberg reports German midfielder Sami Khedira’s strike to make it 5-0 after only 29 minutes also set a record for tweets per minute, at 580,166.

Seattle Seahawks’ wide receiver Percy Harvin making a 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown during the Superbowl only hit 381,605 tweets.
