German teachers on strike for higher wages

Thousands of German public service workers are staging a short-term strike in a bid to receive higher wages and preserve pension benefits.

Teachers and other public employees including police and firefighters walked off the job in multiple states Wednesday. The move is meant to put pressure on the government as it heads into a third round of negotiations next week, according to The Associated Press.

The ver.di union is seeking a pay raise of at least 5.5 percent for the 800,000 public workers it represents. It also opposes a plan that would reduce pension benefits by 20 percent.
