George W. Bush's daughter to speak at MSU

Posted online
George W. Bush's daughter Barbara Pierce Bush, CEO of health services nonprofit organization Global Health Corps, will speak April 13 at Missouri State University as part of its 2011 Public Affairs Conference.

In 2008, Bush co-founded Global Health Corps, which matches American university graduates with global health partner organizations, according to MSU's Public Affairs Conference Web page.

Prior to founding Global Health Corps, Bush worked for Red Cross Children's Hospital in Capetown, South Africa, and interned for United Nations Children's Fund in Botswana, according to the Web site.

According to the event site, Bush will speak about "her entrepreneurial experience in starting the Global Health Corps and the experiences of those who are also on the front lines in delivering care to those in need."

Bush joins other speakers at the conference, including:
  • Lynn Dally, artistic director of California-based Jazz Tap Ensemble;
  • Elizabeth Molina Morgan, executive director of Grad Nation, a national movement of Washington, D.C.-based American's Promise Alliance;
  • Bill Perry, senior executive of Chicago-based global management and technology consulting firm Accenture;
  • Stephen Prothero, professor of religion at Boston University; and
  • Lateefah Simon, a civil rights advocate and director of re-entry programs within the San Francisco district attorney's office.
A host of panelists also will be included in the conference, which is free and open to the public April 12-15.

In separate but related news, Nancy Lublin, CEO of New York-based nonprofit youth organization DoSomething.org, is Missouri State University's 2011 Public Affairs Convocation Lecture featured speaker. She will speak March 30 at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts.

"This is a great opportunity for young adults to learn about making a difference in their communities with the added benefit of finding out about grant opportunities through DoSomething.org,” Mary Ann Wood, MSU director of public affairs support, said in the release.

The organization gives out a $500 Do Something Seed Grant each week to aid community action projects, as well as other funding opportunities.

According to the release, more than 1 million youth participated in DoSomething.org programs in 2010.[[In-content Ad]]
