Gem of India to make way for Masala Square

Posted online

Gem of India is slated to reopen under a new name in February after closing late last year for remodeling.

Officials with the Indian restaurant at 211 W. Battlefield Road made announcements about the change to Masala Square in November and December via Facebook. The business and property are owned by Gurnek Singh and Gurmit Kaur via Navjot Inc., according to Missouri secretary of state filings and Facebook posts.

“Chef Singh has decided to take a break from cooking and go back to his hometown, Boston, for a few months. Starting February 2019, his management team and chef will be reopening as Masala Square,” one post reads, noting interior and exterior remodeling, as well as a “modern twist of chef Singh’s recipes” are coming.

No building permits are currently on file with the city.

Another post indicated the restaurant’s food would remain the same but with a “new face.” The most recent post was made Dec. 19.

Attempts to reach the restaurant owners were unsuccessful by deadline.

Singh also is working to open a Masala Square in Boston, according to the Facebook posts.

Gem of India opened in the early 2000s.
