GE posts higher-than-expected profits

General Electric posted higher-than-expected third-quarter profits, as its businesses producing jet engines and power turbines offset declines in its oil and gas segment.

Net income was $2.5 billion, or 25 cents per share, a decrease from $3.5 billion, or 35 cents per share, a year earlier.

Revenue fell 1.3 percent to $31.7 billion.
