As consumers prepare travel plans for the Memorial Day holiday, gas prices have fallen both in Missouri and the U.S.
The state's gas price average fell 3 cents during the week of May 14-20 to $3.44 per gallon yesterday, which is 18.8 cents lower than a month ago and 24.8 cents lower than a year ago. The national average, which decreased 2.8 cents during the week to $3.70 per gallon, was 15.1 cents lower than a month ago and 13.7 cents lower than the same day in 2011, according to a GasBuddy.com news release.
"With Memorial Day a week away, it's time to put to bed an old myth that gasoline prices rise ahead of a major holiday," said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy.com senior petroleum analyst, in the release. "Average gasoline prices will likely continue to decline in the days ahead of Memorial Day, but folks will still say come next year that prices went up over the weekend this year.
"It's a sign of how sensitive motorists become to gasoline prices around the holidays - nothing more - and most of the time, the myth isn't true."
Missouri's gas average stayed flat today, ranking the state No. 9 in GasBuddy.com's list of the
lowest gas averages by state. South Carolina, with an average of $3.32 per gallon, posted the lowest average.
The lowest price for gas in Missouri this morning could be found for $3.14 per gallon at a filling station in Cassville. The highest price, $3.79 per gallon, was selling at a station in Ste. Genevieve, according to
MissouriGasPrices.com.
