Gander Mountain to build before Bass Pro in S.C. - without tax incentives

Posted online
Outdoor specialty store Gander Mountain announced this week that it would open a new store in North Charleston, S.C., this fall, beating the city's long-awaited Bass Pro Shops to the punch by several months.

An important distinction, according to the Charleston City Paper, is Gander Mountain will build without tax incentives from the city.

Bass Pro will receive the benefit of city-funded street improvements near its planned site, as well as tax breaks related to visitors and ccapital investment of at least $25 million, according to the paper.

The Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity reports that Bass Pro has received more than $1.3 billion worth of incentives from state and municipal governments since 1997, according to the report.
