Gander Mountain targets Bass Pro, Cabela's in St. Louis market

Posted online
St. Paul, Minn.-based Gander Mountain plans to enter the hunting and fishing retail space in St. Louis, where Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's already go head to head.

Gander Mountain announced this week it would open its first Missouri store in spring 2014. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the company plans to remodel 65,000 square feet in the Gravois Bluffs Shopping Center near the intersection of Highway 30 and Highway 141 in Fenton.

With 131 stores in 24 states, Gander Mountain has more stores than both Bass Pro, more than 60 stores, and Cabella's, 50 stores. After experiencing financial problems in the mid-1990s, Gander Mountain has had a resurgence opening about 18 new stores in the last 18 months, the Post-Dispatch said. The Fenton store is one of about seven stores slated to open in 2014.
