Posted online
Dan Kinney retired from the Springfield-Greene County Park Board in 2006 after serving 35 years with the department and leaving an indelible mark on the Springfield area. Under Kinney, the Parks system grew from 33 parks and recreation facilities in 1971 to 88 in 2005, and today has more than 75 miles of linear park trails. The department received several awards during Kinney’s tenure, including the 2000 National Gold Medal Award from the National Recreation and Park Association. Kinney served as the Amateur Softball Association’s Missouri State Commissioner for 20 years and helped organize the Greater Springfield Area Sports Commission. In 2006, Kinney was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2010, he was named to Missouri Park and Recreation Association’s Hall of Fame.
