Ga. lawmakers send religious-freedom bill to governor

Posted online
Georgia legislators have sent a bill to the governor that critics say would sanction discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

The legislation is designed to prevent the government from penalizing faith-based organizations for refusing to hire or serve someone because of its religious beliefs. The bill also protects religious officials who decline to officiate gay marriages.

A business group dubbed Georgia Prospers, which includes AT&T, Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines, Home Depot and UPS, has warned against the potential economic backlash the state could face if such a bill were to pass.

The Missouri General Assembly is considering similar legislation.
