Nine months into the pandemic, thousands of businesspeople are working from home and dialing into video conferences instead of boarding planes.
The trend could mean long-term trouble for hotels, airlines, convention centers and other industries that rely so heavily on business travelers. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, work travel accounted for 21% of the $8.9 trillion spent on global travel and tourism in 2019.
But executives at some U.S. airlines are reporting business travel revenues down 85%-90%. With little relief in sight, the executives hope business travel will settle 10%-20% below previous levels.
