The immediate future looks bright for Debra Ferguson's subcontracting business in Springfield, D. Ferguson Construction Inc. Ferguson will take over the office of president of Springfield Contractors Association in January 1999.
"I pick up a lot of state and city work in fact, that's what I mostly do," Ferguson said, "and I see that going right on because this area is growing. Springfield has a lot of intersections on the agenda. I see lots of street widening, maintenance and a lot of stuff like that I like to do."
Ferguson's company has the contract with city of Springfield for 300 wheelchair ramps in the center city area. She is currently installing drop inlets on Glenstone for the Missouri Department of Transportation.
With only one workers' compensation claim in 20 years in business, Ferguson said she has a plan in place to assure safety in the future.
"I give my guys a prevailing-wage day off each year for a perfect safety record, and that really helps," she said. Required by law on most city and state jobs, the prevailing wage is $20.08 an hour here.
