After increasing by 50 cents a gallon or more due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina, gasoline prices have begun to fall. Gasoline production has increased dramatically, a sign that refineries are working to maximize production. Gasoline imports also are up and should continue to be above normal for the coming months. The Energy Information Administration expects prices to slowly decline in the coming weeks, though prices will remain above pre-storm levels. Below is the national average price per gallon for gasoline and the West Texas Intermediate spot price per barrel for crude oil, as well as a snapshot of prices in Springfield. The U.S. average for gasoline per gallon was $2.96 as of Sept. 12, down 22 cents from Sept. 5. Crude oil was $64.21 per barrel as of Sept. 9, up $2.70 from Sept. 2.
