The increases in gas prices from Aug. 8–15 were the largest since the Energy Information Administration began tracking weekly retail prices in 1990. The rapid increase is attributed to a combination of crude oil prices and short gasoline supplies due to refinery outages. Prices are expected to climb over the next few weeks, but assuming the outages are temporary, prices should begin to fall after Labor Day, according to the EIA. Below is the national average retail gasoline price per gallon, a price snapshot in Springfield and crude oil spot prices per barrel as reported by West Texas Intermediate.
