Record gasoline import volume levels over recent weeks, combined with gasoline production climbing to near pre-hurricane levels, have allowed gasoline prices to drop significantly. These events come at a time when gasoline demand usually drops, with fewer people taking vacations. Diesel users haven’t been so lucky; heating oil, like diesel, is a distillate, meaning demand usually increases as the weather turns colder turning prices upward. The Energy Information Administration reports that retail diesel prices Oct. 24 averaged more than 55 cents per gallon higher than gasoline, compared to being 2 cents per gallon lower than gasoline Aug. 29. The U.S. average price for gasoline was $2.60 per gallon as of Oct. 24. down 12 cents from Oct. 17. The price of crude oil per barrel was $61.05 as of Oct. 21, up $1.56 from Oct. 14.
