The past year in gas prices was tumultuous to say the least. Gasoline prices reached all-time unadjusted highs, with price spikes beginning well before the impact of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Most of the increase is due to rises in crude oil prices worldwide, which occurred for a variety of reasons including shortages and an inability for oil producers to keep up with demand. The U.S. average price of gasoline per gallon was $2.20 as of Dec. 26, down 1 cent from Dec. 19. The price of crude oil per barrel was $58.08 as of Dec. 23, up 7 cents from Dec. 16.
