Project description: The Southwest Center for Independent Living is adding services for people with disabilities that might otherwise prevent them from living on their own. Director Gary Maddox said the $2.4 million multiphase project will expand the center's assistive technology and home modification departments as well as create an in-home service program. The project's first phase is an addition, remodel and parking expansion. The final phase will be a $1.6 million building across the street, specifically for the assistive technology program, which currently has to store recycled medical equipment off-site, Maddox said. Kenny Ross of Morelock-Ross Builders said his company will handle all phases, but fundraising is ongoing for the new 18,000-square-foot building, and no construction start date has been scheduled.
